I’ve got to tell you guys you really can try EFT on everything.  I think it’s one of the best ways to help us face our fears.  If you’d had a painful event in your life and you are conscious of the damage it might still be doing to you, then EFT is the tool that will allow you to permanently release the layers of trauma in your body’s memory that are keeping you from living your life to the fullest.

Trauma as defined by the EFT Master Rick Wilkes is a moment when you’re capacity to fight or flight was disabled and you therefore “froze.”  Our bodies have 3 ways in which it responds to a traumatic event: fight where you’re instincts would be to defend yourself, flight where you would run away to save yourself, and freeze which is where you were not able to do either of the other two so you got stuck and all of the details of the event “froze” in your body and mind.

That traumatic event is therefore trapped in your subconscious mind and it replays each time you find yourself in a circumstance where any details of the trauma are present, causing your body to have the same stress response.  Because the subconscious mind doesn’t know the difference between past and present, all it knows is that this situation feels the same so it will therefore trigger the same response. EFT will allow you to release that trapped energy and free you of it’s damaging effects in your life.  It’s not necessary to continue to relive our traumas.  It doesn’t help us at all.

For example, I had a really difficult first year of graduate school.  I’m living in a foreign country with different customs and people of course have very different mentalities than my own.  I had several bad experiences that I would classify as traumatic because they left me frozen and terrified and feeling absolutely helpless.  So every time I would come in contact with the people that hurt me or situations that reminded me of the moment or the day or even the room I was in, it would just put me in this very awful frightened state.  My hands would shake, my palms would sweat, my armpits would sweat, and I would lose my appetite for days.  These freakout moments were a weekly if not daily event, so you can imagine my state.  It just wasn’t healthy.  I was very depressed, stressed, and almost had resigned to the idea that I would be a mess for the rest of my life and never be able to live or succeed at anything.

When I discovered tapping and started using it on various issues, my life seriously changed.  I dreaded tapping on the hard stuff because I didn’t want to think about the events and feel the pain again and all the crying, but honestly, it was the only thing that was going to get me out of this rut and let me feel human again.  I tapped for maybe 20 minutes on the issue and just let it all out until I felt that it wasn’t overtaking me anymore.  The results were that I seriously no longer shake or sweat all the time. I noticed it was really gone a few weeks ago when I went to put a glass down and I no longer had the fear that I would drop it because my hand was no longer shaking.  It was such an empowering moment to realize that that physical memory of the event was not any longer a part of me.  I had let it go.
